Canberra's water supply comes primarily from the Googong Reservoir, which provides around 80% of the ACT's needs, supplemented by the Corin and Bendora dams in Namadgi National Park. The raw water is naturally soft and relatively pure from its alpine origins.
Like Sydney and Melbourne, ActewAGL Water uses chloramination to disinfect Canberra's distribution network. The chloramine compound - chlorine combined with ammonia - is stable and effective but creates a persistent chemical taste and odour that does not dissipate by boiling or standing. During warmer months, blue-green algal blooms in the Googong Reservoir can introduce earthy or musty taste compounds that whole house filtration intercepts before they reach your taps.
