What's Actually in Sydney's Water?
Sydney draws from Warragamba Dam and the Blue Mountains system, delivering naturally soft, low-TDS water. The problem isn't the source. Since 2008, Sydney Water has used chloramination - a blend of chlorine and ammonia - to disinfect the distribution network. It's effective at killing pathogens, but it leaves a persistent chemical taste and odour that most residents simply learn to accept.
In older suburbs with copper or lead-jointed pipes - parts of the Inner West, the Inner East and some heritage areas - the water can also pick up heavy metal traces before it reaches your glass. Unlike standard chlorine, chloramine does not dissipate by boiling or standing, which is why standard jugs are only partially effective.
