Why Perth Homeowners Are Making the Switch

Vector

Perth’s electricity prices have climbed year after year and they’re not slowing down. With over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, WA homeowners who go solar are slashing power bills, earning feed-in credits, and future-proofing their homes against rising costs.

The question isn’t whether solar makes sense in Perth. It’s why you haven’t done it yet.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does a typical residential solar system in Perth cost upfront, and what payment options are available?

For most Perth homes, quality systems (panels + inverter, fully installed) commonly sit in the ~$3,000–$8,000+ range depending on system size, hardware brands, and roof complexity, after applying the federal STC incentive. You can usually pay upfront, via green/solar loans, or interest‑free/payment‑plan options offered by many installers; just be aware that “interest‑free” deals often build costs into the system price, so comparing the true total cost is important.

Size is normally based on your last 6–12 months of Synergy bills (kWh usage), how much power you use during the day, your roof space, and whether you plan to add a battery or EV later. Many “average” Perth households end up in the 5–8 kW range, but homes with high daytime usage (pool pumps, home offices, ducted air‑con) often benefit from going larger if roof and network limits allow. A good installer should model your usage and propose 1–2 system sizes with estimated savings rather than a one‑size‑fits‑all package.

Solar cuts bills in two ways: (1) every kWh you use directly from your system avoids buying that power from Synergy at the retail tariff, and (2) any excess exported earns a credit via the DEBS buyback rate, though this is much lower than the retail rate. The more you shift usage into daylight hours, the higher your savings. Many well‑designed systems in Perth commonly see simple payback in roughly 3–6 years depending on system size, usage patterns, tariff type, and future power price changes.

Under WA’s Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), eligible residential customers are paid a set cents‑per‑kWh rate for excess solar (and battery) energy exported to the grid, with different day/evening rates that can change over time. The buyback rate is significantly lower than what you pay for grid power, so systems are now designed mainly to maximise self‑consumption rather than export. Your installer will lodge the necessary forms so Synergy and Western Power can reconfigure or replace your meter for export, and your bill will then show both energy bought from the grid and energy exported/credited.

In WA, new or upgraded rooftop solar systems need network approval from Western Power and to be registered correctly with Synergy so export limits, metering, and billing are set up properly. A reputable installer normally handles the entire application and approval process on your behalf including checking phase/connection limits, securing permission to connect, and organising the meter change then lets you know when you’re approved and when export will start appearing on your Synergy bill.
